The SG550 Sniper came into existence as a accurized version of the standard SG550.

The SG550 was developed for the Swiss Army as a 5.56x45 assault rifle, and development took place in 1979-1980. After a number of tests in competition with a design from Federal Arms, the SG550 was selected in 1983. However, due to financial issues, the rifle was not actually produced until 1986 under the name of the Stgw90.

The entire rifle was carefully created in order to save weight. Plastics were used in the butt, handguard, and magazine of the weapon. The magazines are clear plastic so that the number of remaining rounds can be easily checked. The mags also have studs on the side so that a number of mags can be clipped together for fast reloads. The buttstock is foldable, and even when folded, the rifle balances well. The SG500 assault rifle is provided with a 3rd burst mode, and the sights are equipped with luminous inserts for night combat.

The SG550 Sniper is modified from a standard 550 by providing it with a heavy barrel that was hammer-forged. The automatic trigger group was swapped out in favor of a semi-automatic one that has a 'set' feature that allows the trigger to be set so that it can be fired with a touch of the trigger. The trigger is adjustable to the shooter's preferences, and the buttstock is adjustable for length, and has an adjustable cheekpiece. The pistol grip, of the PSG-1 type, can be adjusted for angle of rake, and the handrest at the bottom can be positioned for maximum comfort. The scope can be adjusted so that it falls naturally against the shooter's eye. All in all, the rifle caters to the sniper's every will, being extremely customizable for the best possible fit to the shooter.
The rifle is provided with a Hendsoldt 1.5-6x42mm scope. One unusual feature of the rifle that causes some second glances is the flat plate that is above the handguard. This is a retractable anti-glare/heat shield that prevents glare and heat radiation from interferring with the line of sight through the telescope. The system is quite accurate, and is capable of sub-MOA performance.
