The Kalashnikov family of rifles has been the standard issue assault rifle for the Russian army and its allies since the late 1940's. The AK-47, the famous father of the family, was actually introduced into service in 1949, despite what the name suggests. The impeteus for the new weapon was the German MP44, the world's first assault rifle. The ability to provide for fully automatic fire intrigued the Russians, and set about creating their own system. The end result was the AK-47, the world's most widely distributed automatic rifle. More than 35 million are said to have been made for militaries alone; this does not include the hundreds of thousands made for civilians such as in the United States. In addition to the hands of Russian military forces, the AK-47 will always be found in the hands of nationalist movements inspired by the Communists.
![]() | The AK-47 is very reliable. It is gas operated, but will last a long time without cleaning, unlike the AR-15 family of weapons. It can be thrown in the mud and fired without being wiped off. They function in every climate and extreme, almost without fail. Their reliability is almost legendary. Even minor details such as the return spring on the trigger has been engineered for reliability - instead of a single piece of metal, the spring is made of several strands of metal wound together so that if one breaks, the weapon can still function. However, in spite of its popularity, the weapon has several defects. Perhaps the most important is the sights. To be put plainly, the sights are horrible. The weapon is not very accurate at ranges over 300 meters, since the weapon is made to such loose tolerances. The safety makes a distinct 'clack' sound as it is lowered to the firing position, and this 'clack' sound has spoiled many ambushes. There are several modifications to the basic AK-47. The original AK-47 was constructed with a milled reciever. However, this milled reciever was heavy and expensive to make, so in 1959, the reciever was changed to a version where steel stampings were pinned and riveted together. The bolt was Parkerized instead of the polished steel of before, and the bayonet was modified so that when it was engaged with a stud on the scabbard, it could function as a wire cutter. A spoon-like muzzle compensator was added to help control the weapon in fully automatic fire. All of these changes resulted in the AKM.

The AK-47 is one of the oldest weapons in Counter-Strike, and yet it has one of the most glaring problems. The reciever in the AK-47 is not modeled properly at all. The safety is in the up position, which safes the weapon and makes it impossible to retract the cocking handle far back enough to eject a cartridge (although it can be retracted far enough to check for a loaded chamber). The safety lever should also go into the track where the cocking handle recipriocates under recoil - but in the CS AK-47, there isn't even the cut-out for the safety handle.

The AK-47 in the game is deadly accurate on the first shot, as well. This shouldn't be so, since the real AK-47 isn't a very accurate weapon by any means.
